President vetoes wider retiree benefits: current discounts stay
President José Raúl Mulino has vetoed Bill No. 226, which expanded the mandatory discounts for retirees, and returned it to the National Assembly. He found the bill inappropriate and contrary to the law and the Constitution.

The bill added discounts on air tickets, hotels, medicines, private clinics and utilities. The veto does not touch the current Law No. 6 of 1987: every existing retiree benefit stays in force. The government, retirees and business are discussing an agreed replacement; retirees are asking for it to be adopted by 31 October.
